DESCRIPTION;ENCODING=QUOTED-PRINTABLE:For those who know the Merchant's house, the idea of the home being destroy=
ed over a developers dream is painful. Below is a letter from the museum's =
Executive Director, Margaret Halsey Gardiner's. . .

Dear Friends of the Merchant's House,

I am writing to alert you of a grave threat to the Merchant's House.

A developer has proposed building a 9-story hotel next door at 27 East 4th =
Street. The potential damage to our very fragile 1832 landmark building dur=
ing demolition of the existing garage and construction of the new hotel is =
huge. The risk to the house may simply be too great. (If nothing else, the =
statistics on houses that have collapsed under similar circumstances is fri=
ghtening.) We need to have an extensive study performed =E2=80=94 by an ind=
ependent engineer =E2=80=94 to assess the potential impact on the MHM =E2=
=80=94 before any design plans are even considered, much less approved.

I don't scare easily, and it is not in my nature to overreact, but this pro=
posed development poses a beyond-serious threat to the structural stability=
of the house. I have been director for 20+ years =E2=80=94 I know from exp=
erience.

PLEASE:

1. Sign our petition: go to this link and send to all your friends: http://=

2. Attend the Community Board #2 hearing on Monday, May 14, 6:30 pm, at Chu=
rch of Our Lady of Pompeii, 25 Carmine Street, Father Demo Hall.

I hope you will come out in force to support the Merchant's House.

With great thanks. I know you care about the house as much as we do.

Margaret Halsey Gardiner
Executive Director
