Hidden away in the basement of the Museum of Sex exists one of the most intriguing dessert secrets below 34th Street: OralFix Cafe. Anglepoise desk lamps with exposed Victorian Edison bulbs dimly light the heavy brick walls, sleek dark glass tables, and arched entryways, evoking a mystery reminiscent of Mary Shelley's 1931 Frankenstein.

The drinks menu, aptly titled “Potions,” cuts to the chase immediately, with suggestive cocktail names such as “Lucky Devil” and “Aphrodite” and their aphrodisiac effects listed underneath (potency and lust; and excitement and joy, respectively). For patrons looking to playfully test their boundaries, the selection of flavorful concoctions easily seals the deal with their vibrant pops of color and aromatic, smooth taste.

Behind the counter, large glass laboratory bottles containing the ingredients for the desserts and drinks line the shelves mounted on the wall, lending the café an air of scientific cred. And sure enough, it is scientific cred they draw upon, with each bottle containing freshly-infused fruits and herbs notorious for their alleged aphrodisiac qualities in various cultures — effects claimed through the centuries and documented in the Museum of Sex’s extensive research library.

A few ingredients and their effects are expected: chocolate is linked to libido and rose to seduction; others are uncommon and surprising: ginger arouses urge, while almond encourages virility. Even the crystallized sugars used to rim the glasses and the sweet sauces that dress the desserts include floral infusions, such as rose petals and lavender. Rose has been used all the way back since ancient Rome as a favorite weapon in the art of love, while lavender’s delicate purple flower purportedly stimulates the senses and relaxes the mind.

The food supplements the drinks perfectly. The mango mousse with rose petal sauce is delicately floral and fragrant; the warm dark chocolate lava cake and pomegranate mango with crystallized violet are sinfully sensuous.

Dishes and drinks alike are prepared by a two-person team with a knack for artisanal treats. The space is available for private events and parties, and is a perfect place to take a date with a sense of humor. One can easily imagine Aphrodite smiling beatifically down and winking in approval — the Museum of Sex’s OralFix Café has gotten wind of some of her best secrets, and you know what? That’s A-OK with her.
