New York City's only Chinese department store and a New York institution. No matter how many times revisited, Pearl River Mart is always a fun and interesting place to shop. The two and a half floor-through store spans between Broadway and Mercer Street occupying the basement up to the second floor selling everything from party favors and herbal remedies to large scale furnishings. The trickling waterfall combined with traditional Oriental music gently echos throughout the space while patrons shop or sit to enjoy a refreshment on the tea balcony where a large variety of loose teas are offered including freshly brewed teas in individual pots.
Explore the store for home decor items such as painted bamboo shades, paper umbrellas and trendy sparkling slippers. When looking for basic kitchen cookware Pearl River cannot be beat with it's quaint department of affordable cooking and serving items. Discover basic Asian foods from bags of jasmine rice and dried anchovies to American Almond Roca candies in a tin. It is a bargain shopper's paradise. The lighting department is stocked with evening lanterns, glowing Buddha lamps and for children are cricket cages, books and imaginative toys. Beautiful colorful party decorations and hand-made gift wrapping papers which typically fetch premium prices in more upscale stores, can be purchased here at steep discounts.
With so many inexpensive novelty gifts and goods from around the world it is a market destination for New Yorkers and tourists alike. Specializing in a wide range of traditional Chinese clothing and products Pearl River Mart also imports treasures from around the world such as Portugal and Japan. Expensive looking hand-painted porcelain dishes and tea sets can be had for a small price. Pretty purse items with a luxurious feel are always a good buy. Pearl River Mart gives a new meaning to department store shopping. One never knows what one will discover.
