Don’t let the name fool you, because Café Grumpy is anything but a grouchy place to sip on a deliciously brewed cup o’ Joe. The café’s Chelsea location opened on a quaint block in 2006 and is one of four Café Grumpy venues around the New York area. Its laptop free environment is warm and welcoming to those interested in catching up on some reading, enjoying conversation with a friend or even those just looking for a quiet change of pace from the bustling Manhattan streets. All of Café Grumpy’s pastries and treats are freshly baked in its Lower East Side bakery, and the sweets are made from local and organic ingredients when possible. Café Grumpy also has in-house roasted coffees made through a special process that reduces emissions and gas use, which makes you socially responsible for choosing its products. And for those budding baristas out there, Café Grumpy even offers milk steaming and latte art classes, as well as a course on home brewing. With a worldly tea selection, locally brewed coffee, seating in the cool, industrial interior and benches outside under the sun, a trip to Café Grumpy has a little something for everyone.
